How is vape e-liquid made?

In most cases, mixing measured quantities of PG, VG, Flavouring and Nicotine. The mixed liquid is then bottled and labelled.

What is PG?

PG means Propylene Glycol… The fluid has no odor or color and is less viscous than VG. In vaping it we use PG to provide a ‘throat hit’, which some users claim is similar to the sensation experienced when smoking tobacco.  Used for more than 50 years in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

What is VG?

Made from plants Vegerable Glycerin (VG) is used as a sugar substitute. It is of low toxicity and generally hypo-allergenic. VG is also found in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.  VG is much thicker than PG. It provides a smoother vape, produces more vapour with less of a throat hit and the sweetness of it tends to mask the flavours. Though some find that because there is more vapour, they feel the flavour lingers slightly longer in the mouth.  You can buy the best UK vape sale VG on this site.

What PG VG ratio of liquid should I buy?

Higher VG e-liquids produce thicker clouds. Higher PG liquids, on the other hand, produce thinner clouds, but a stronger flavor and a more potent hit to the back of the throat on the inhale.  Low powered vape devices can struggle with the thicker VG liquid.  Therefor, a typical ratio would be 30% PG and 70% VG for medium to high powered devices and 50:50 or higher PG for lower powered devices or for vapers who focus on flavour.

What strength of nicotine should I vape

Nicotine strength is usually given as how many mg (milligrams) of nicotine per ml (millilitre) of vape liquid.  This is sometimes shortened to just the mg number.  0mg is best for individuals who have worked their way down from higher vape juice nicotine levels, or want to vape without the existence of nicotine.  3mg is best for vapers who are stepping down from higher vape nicotine levels, or those who were only light (less than 10 cigarettes per day) smokers previously.  6mg/mL is usually best for new vapers who were formally light to moderate smokers, or those who were formally smokers of “light” cigarettes. 12mg and 18mg/ml is usually best for new vapers who were formally heavy cigarette smokers (up to 30 cigarettes/day), or smokers of unfiltered cigarettes.  20mg is the highest strength that can be sold in the UK and most EU countries since the introduction of TPD legislation.

What is TPD?

In short, the Tobacco Products Directive 2014/14/EU (TPD) introduced new rules for nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes and refill containers from May 2016. This in-effect restricts the maximum size for e-liquid which contains nicotine in a single bottle to 10ml.  In addition, to this, Vape devices must have a tank (storage) of 2ml liquid or less.  2% or 20mg/ml limit on nicotine levels.  Also, all e-liquid must now come with warning labels.  The EU introduced the TPD directive which directed individual EU member states to introduce TPD legislation.  This means EU member state legislation may differ slightly.  We can assure you that all our best UK vape sale products are TPD compliant.

What is a shortfill?

A shortfill is an e liquid with no nicotine but comes in a part-filled container (approximately 80% filled) for the purpose of adding your personal preference of nicotine strength to it. This allows you to buy higher volumes of e liquid, as well as getting your e liquid at a cheaper price.  A shortfill, in general, is sold as 50ml nicotine free e liquid within a 60ml container.  When you add a 10ml, 18mg nic shot to a shortfill, the final mixed liquid is 60ml of liquid, with a 3mg strength.

What a nic shot?

A nic shot is a 10ml high strength (usually 18mg but max 20mg) nicotine liquid which you add to a shortfill. Innevape provide Flavour Ups which contain shortfills and nic shots that are similarly flavoured to ensure you get the best full flavour when you mix them together!  Buy the amazing Innevape Flavour Up products from Mantle Europe!

How to mix a shortfill (60ml/3mg final product).

Shortfills contain all of the components required for an e-liquid, other than nicotine. So, in a standard shortfill you have VG (Vegetable Glycerine), PG (Propylene Glycol) and Flavourings. This is an ideal situation for people who don’t use nicotine in their e-liquid. For people who do require nicotine in their e-liquid the most common way to do this is by adding a nic-shot to a shortfill.

The most common size/volume of a shortfill is 50ml which is held in a 60ml capacity bottle. This leaves enough space to add the full contents of a 10ml nic-shot. The most common strength of nic-shots is 18mg strength of Nicotine infused in a 10ml of a VG/PG mix.

This means that the finished bottle will contain 60ml of liquid containing 3mg strength of nicotine.

SAFETY: Please ensure you wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses when mixing with nicotine. If you spill the nicotine, or get any on your skin, wash off immediately with soap and water. Always keep away from children.

To mix (see the Shortfill & Nic Shot Mixing Guide (60ml/3mg*) below.

How to mix a shortfill (60ml/6mg final product).

If you require 6mg of nicotine in your shortfill, you will need to remove 10ml of the liquid in the shortfill, therefor 2 x nic-shots can be added, otherwise, the shots will not fit in the bottle!

This means that the finished bottle will contain 60ml of liquid containing 6mg strength of Nicotine.

TIP: If you save the 10ml of liquid, you removed from the shortfill, in a suitable container, on the fourth occasion you will have enough saved to create a 60ml shortfill, if you add 2 x nic-shots to the 40ml of e-liquid you have saved.

SAFETY: Please ensure you wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses when mixing with nicotine. If you spill the nicotine or get any on your skin, wash off immediately with soap and water. Always keep away from children.

How to maintain the perfect flavour when adding a Nic shot

Shortfills can be vaped with or without nicotine, allowing the user to choose, and have some control over the amount of nicotine being added to their personal vape.

You can see from our ‘How to mix a shortfill’ guide for 3mg, and 6mg variations (above) that there is some flexibility for the user.

So what if I wanted to add nicotine without loosing any flavour?

The answer comes from our friends at Innevape, and by the means of a ‘Flavour Up’ where both shortfill, and Nic shot packaged in the box are both flavoured. This gives the user 60ml of full flavoured eliquid at 3mg of nicotine.

So what if I wanted 60ml of 6mg nicotine, without loosing flavour?

Well quite simply by following the 60ml/6mg guide (above) where you have 1 x Shortfill and 2 x Flavour Matched Nic Shots (18mg) remembering to remove 10ml from the shortfill before adding the Nic Shots.

There are 2 ways/options of achieving this:

Option 1: Purchase 1 x Flavour Up box and 1 x Innevape Flavour Matched Shot.

Option 2: Purchase 1 x Innevape Shortfill and 2 x Innevape Flavour Matched Shot.

Reducing Nicotine by Smaller Steps

Most commercially available e-liquids, sold in 10ml bottles come on 5 strengths of nicotine: 18mg, 12mg, 6mg, 3mg and 0mg of nicotine.

Question: I want to reduce the amount of nicotine in my e-liquid, but I think reducing by 3mg as a step is too much, how do I do this?

Answer: You could try to reduce nicotine strength in 1.5mg steps, by using the guide below, therefor your reduction is not so steep.

Target NicotinePurchase RequirementsGuide
0mg1 x ShortfillDo not add Nic shot
1.5mg1 x Flavour UpAdd half contents of 1 x Nic Shot to the shortfill
3mg1 x Flavour UpAdd full contents of 1 x Nic Shot to the shortfill
4.5mg1 x Flavour Up
1 x Flavour Matched Nic Shot
Remove 5ml from shortfill, then add full contents of
1 x Nic Shot and half contents of 1 x Nic Shot to the shortfill
6mg1 x Flavour Up
1 x Flavour Matched Nic Shot
Remove 10ml from shortfill, then Add contents of 2 x Nic Shot to the shortfill

Tip: In in the above, where you have used a part of a Nic shot, the rest can be retained for your next flavour matched mix.
